The house in Shusha where the world-renowned singer, founder of Azerbaijani professional vocal art, People's Artist, and Professor Bulbul lived as a child operated as his house-museum until 1992. The house consisted of two rooms and a balcony. An inscription discovered on the wall of the house indicates that the building was constructed in 1788. The singer Bulbul was born in this house on June 22, 1897, and spent his childhood there. It was here that he first stepped into the world of music, watching and listening to famous singers and musicians.
In 1982, under the directive of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, a decision was made to turn the house where Bulbul was born and lived into a house-museum. The building was renovated between 1982–1983, a museum exhibition was created, and an administrative building was constructed in front of it. The museum housed around 400 exhibits reflecting Bulbul’s creative, scientific-research, pedagogical, and public activities. It also preserved photographs from Bulbul’s childhood, personal belongings, his singer's costume, tuxedo, tambourine, piano, and original documents.
Unfortunately, all the exhibits were looted during the occupation.
After the liberation of Shusha, the house-museum and its yard were restored while preserving their original appearance. On August 29, 2021, the house-museum of Bulbul in Shusha was reopened with the participation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
Among the memorial plaques on the museum's facade is a bronze portrait of Bulbul as a child, created by sculptor Khanlar Ahmadov.
In the museum yard, there is a display of the vandalized bust of Bulbul (by Karim Rzayev), a symbol of Armenian vandalism, alongside a newly crafted bust (by Aslan and Mahmud Rustamov).
During the restoration, stones bearing a sun symbol, an anti-evil eye prayer, and an inscription stating that the house was built by Karbalayi Yusif in 1787–88 were discovered on the wall.
Currently, the museum exhibits items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bulbul’s tambourine, a wax mannequin depicting Bulbul at the age of 13–14 made in Turkey by Senan Fatullayev, photos from his childhood and youth, a copy of his passport issued in Ganja, documents and photos reflecting his time in Italy, copies of diplomas and posters, replicas of the medals and orders awarded to Bulbul, and sections dedicated to National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev.
The museum exhibition is based on the archives of Bulbul’s Memorial Museum operating in Baku.
To provide more comprehensive information about Bulbul’s legacy, a touchscreen monitor inside the museum offers materials about his life and work—from childhood to the end of his life—including recordings, quotes about him, and more, in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, Arabic, and Chinese. The museum also features a guestbook for visitors to share their impressions.
Bulbul house-museum’s exhibition is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Closed on Mondays.
