The comedy "Heaven and Hell" by poet-dramatist Sahib Ibrahimli consists of two acts and two scenes. The plot of the comedy is made up of humorous events taking place in both the real and mystical worlds (in Hell). The main characters of the play are a married couple, Mustafa and Layagat, who, after their deaths, end up in Hell. The reason for their descent into Hell is their failure to live their lives properly, indulging in fraud, deception, vice, and bad habits in the pursuit of money and wealth.
Just as they lived in comfort and light in the real world, upon reaching Hell, they continue to try to pursue their greedy and selfish lifestyle. They attempt to apply the same dirty tricks and deceptions they used in the real world in this dark environment. When they are not allowed into Heaven, they hope to achieve something in Hell by bribing others, causing conflict between Inkir and Minkir, Azrael and Satan, Huris and Qilman, creating quarrels, and spreading slander and lies. They believe that through these methods they will accomplish their goals. Eventually, their extreme inhuman actions drive Azrael to the point of deciding to commit suicide. The fact that Azrael, the enemy of humanity, decides to end his own life due to the actions of Mustafa and Layagat creates a clear and powerful image for the audience of how repugnant their lives must have been in the real world.
The performance ends with the failure of Mustafa and Layagat's foolish attempts to amend their wrongdoings, which serve as the target of the play's criticism. The main idea that the author and the entire creative team wish to convey to the audience is that people must choose the right path in life, avoid immoral acts such as greed, selfishness, and egoism, and lead a pure and honest life.
